Contains the following type of materials: photographs. Covers the following wars: Late Indian Wars, World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII). Contains photographs of the following military units: 5th United States (U.S.) Cavalry; 8th U.S. Cavalry, 7th U.S. Cavalry. General description of the collection: The Washington I. Wallace photograph collection includes mostly copy print photographs of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and earlier photos extracted from collections elsewhere, perhaps the National Archives; photographs dealing with the activities of the 5th U.S. Cavalry, 8th U.S. Cavalry, and the 7th U.S. Cavalry during the late Indian Wars, culminating with the aftermath of the Wounded Knee battle and the burying of the dead. Photos relating to Fort Huachuca, Arizona tracing it early history; Mexican Border Service and units, camps and activities at various sites, Fort Bliss, Texas being prominent among them. The photos of WWI and WWII are all Army Signal Corps showing a variety of subjects both in the U.S., Europe and the Pacific Theaters. A number of photographs taken during the 1920's and 1930's are of horse shows and equitation meets. It seems that the majority of this collection was put together with special emphasis on the activities of the U.S. Cavalry from 1886 through WWII. Army Signal Corps which are found elsewhere in the collections here at the Military History Institute and the National Archives.
